COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE / METHODS GUIDE

How to compare competitors fairly

The purpose of a comparison is to explain what observable differences could mean for a business decision.

Select relevant comparators

Choose companies that compete for similar customers or solve a similar problem. Separate direct competitors from adjacent alternatives, and explain why each belongs in the comparison.

Compare the same thing

A headline price can hide different service levels, contract periods, quantities, or exclusions. Record the date, currency, unit, scope, and conditions wherever available. Identify custom-quote offers without guessing the negotiated fee.

Separate observations from conclusions

A published service description is evidence of how a company presents its offer. It does not establish delivery quality, realized sales, margins, or customer satisfaction. Label the inference when moving from an observation to a strategic interpretation.

Connect the comparison to an action

Organize the findings around a practical choice: refine an offer, test a segment, change positioning, or collect additional evidence. Describe alternatives and limitations rather than implying that the research guarantees an outcome.

This guide explains a research approach. It is general information and does not assess a specific business, market, or live event.
